OpenOffice has build-in comparison mechanism. It is located in Edit / Compare Document menu.
Ti works nice. Recently I've tested it on text documents (Writer) with multilevel numbering and simple tables. It shows differences and allow to accept or reject changes. Its quite smart - it skips special fields like version, page number, date, etc.
Of course you can always save documents as plain text and use diff, but ...
